Circle Salt Cellar Template - Clear Acrylic Woodworking Router Template

Create round wooden salt cellars, small lidded dishes, and handmade kitchen projects with this clear acrylic woodworking router template. The Circle Salt Cellar Template is designed for routing a recessed pocket into wood, making it a practical template for creating compact salt cellars, seasoning dishes, and small storage pieces for the kitchen or dining table.

This template includes half circle inlays that can be used to help create a lid, giving you more than just a simple open dish. The small round size makes it a great project for using premium hardwood blanks, offcuts, and unique species where the grain and colour can become a major part of the finished piece.

What You Can Make With This Template

This salt cellar template is designed for routing recessed pockets into wood, not for cutting a full board shape all the way through. The round shape works well for small kitchen projects, handmade gifts, and compact lidded dishes.

  • Round wooden salt cellars for kitchens, dining tables, and serving areas
  • Small lidded dishes for salt, spices, dry seasonings, or display use
  • Compact handmade kitchen gifts for cooks, food lovers, and woodworkers
  • Small decorative dishes for shelves, counters, or charcuterie setups
  • Craft show products, market items, and small-batch woodworking pieces
  • Projects made from Rosewood, Canarywood, walnut, maple, cherry, or other dimensional hardwoods

Why Use a Clear Acrylic Circle Salt Cellar Template?

A clear acrylic router template makes it easier to position your project before routing. You can see the wood grain, colour, and natural features in your blank, which is especially helpful on small projects where the entire piece is visible once finished.

For a salt cellar, the pocket, outside profile, and lid pieces need to work together cleanly. A reusable acrylic template helps create a more consistent process, whether you are making one salt cellar as a gift or producing several for markets, shop inventory, or online sales.

  • Clear acrylic helps with layout and grain positioning
  • Reusable template for repeat salt cellar and small dish projects
  • Round shape creates a clean, classic kitchen accessory
  • Includes half circle inlays to help create a lid
  • Great for small hardwood blanks, offcuts, and premium species

Recommended Products to Use With This Template

For best results, secure the template properly, use the correct router bits, and work from a flat, stable wood blank. Since this is a smaller template, keeping the router balanced is especially important.

How to Use This Circle Salt Cellar Template

  1. Choose a flat, stable wood blank that is large enough for the 5" diameter template.
  2. Position the clear acrylic template on the wood and adjust the layout based on the grain, colour, and natural features in the board.
  3. Secure the template to the wood using Template Tape.
  4. Use a larger pocketing bit to remove the majority of the material from the recessed pocket area where needed.
  5. Use the inside profiling bit to complete the pocket shape and create the 1/8" radius inside the routed area.
  6. Use the included half circle inlays as part of the lid-making process.
  7. Work in shallow passes and keep the router stable, especially because this is a smaller template.
  8. Remove the template, sand the pocket, lid components, and outside surfaces, then apply the finish that best matches how the finished piece will be used.

For a salt cellar or any food-contact kitchen project, choose a food-safe finish such as Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil. For decorative small dishes or non-food-contact projects, Grand Finishing Hardwax Oil is a strong option.

Yes. The acrylic template is reusable, making it a good option for repeat salt cellar projects, handmade gifts, craft shows, and small-batch woodworking products.

What wood species were used in the example photos?

The example pieces were made with Rosewood in images 1 and 2, and Canarywood in images 3 and 4.

What finish should I use on a wooden salt cellar?

For salt cellars and other food-contact kitchen projects, use a food-safe finish such as Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil. For decorative small dishes that will not be used for food contact, Grand Finishing Hardwax Oil is a good option.
