Jumbo 9 Pocket Valet Tray Template - Clear Acrylic Router Template

Create clean, functional valet trays, catch-all trays, desk organizers, and large wooden dishes with this clear acrylic tray template. The Jumbo 9 Pocket Valet Tray Template is designed for routing recessed pockets into wood, making it a practical option for projects that need organized compartments without cutting a full board shape. Use it to create a finished tray for keys, wallets, watches, jewellery, coins, office items, small accessories, or decorative display pieces.

This template is made from clear acrylic so you can see your layout, grain direction, and workpiece positioning while you rout. It is a great fit for hardwood tray projects, epoxy accent projects, and small-batch woodworking products that need a consistent, repeatable layout.

What You Can Make With This Template

This valet tray template is ideal for creating routed pockets in hardwood boards, laminated blanks, and multi-species glue-ups. Instead of cutting a tray shape all the way through the material, this template helps guide your router so you can create recessed tray pockets with clean edges and a consistent layout.

  • Valet trays for keys, wallets, watches, and everyday carry items
  • Desk organizers for pens, clips, coins, and small office accessories
  • Catch-all trays for entryways, nightstands, dressers, and coffee tables
  • Large wooden dishes for decorative or display use
  • Multi-pocket gift items, craft fair products, or small-batch shop inventory
  • Tray projects made from walnut, maple, cherry, white oak, or mixed-species glue-ups

Why Use a Clear Acrylic Valet Tray Template?

A clear acrylic router template makes it easier to line up your project before cutting. You can see the wood grain, centre your layout, avoid defects, and position the pockets exactly where you want them before securing the template to the workpiece.

For tray projects, this is especially useful because the final look depends on clean pocket placement, balanced borders, and a consistent routing path. The template helps create a repeatable layout, whether you are making one tray for yourself or producing multiple trays for sale.

  • Clear acrylic helps with layout and grain positioning
  • Reusable design for repeat tray projects
  • Helps create clean, consistent recessed pockets
  • Great for hardwood, laminated blanks, and multi-species boards
  • Ideal for giftable woodworking projects and small production runs

Recommended Products to Use With This Template

For best results, use the proper router bits, secure the template firmly, and choose a wood blank that gives you enough thickness for a clean recessed tray pocket.

How to Use This Valet Tray Template

  1. Choose a flat, stable wood blank that is large enough for the overall template size.
  2. Position the clear acrylic template over the wood and adjust the layout based on grain direction, colour, and any natural features in the board.
  3. Secure the template to the wood using Template Tape.
  4. Use a larger pocketing bit to remove the majority of the material from the larger recessed areas.
  5. Use the tray profiling bit for the inside tray pockets. This bit creates the inside tray profile with a 1/8" radius.
  6. Work in shallow passes instead of trying to remove all of the material at once.
  7. Remove the template, sand the routed tray pockets and surface, then finish the project based on how the tray will be used.

For food-contact or serving-style projects, choose a food-safe finish such as Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil. For decorative trays, desk organizers, nightstand trays, and non-food-contact projects, Grand Finishing Hardwax Oil is a strong option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this template used to cut out the full tray shape?

This tray template is intended for routing recessed pockets into wood to create a tray or dish-style project. It is not mainly about cutting a full board shape all the way through the material.

What router bit should I use for the tray pockets?

For larger recessed areas, use a larger pocketing bit to remove most of the material first. For the inside tray profile, use the recommended bowl and tray bit, which creates a 1/8" radius inside the pocket.

How do I attach the acrylic template to the wood?

We recommend using Template Tape. It holds the template securely while routing and avoids screw holes in your project blank.

Can I reuse this valet tray template?

Yes. The clear acrylic template is reusable and works well for making repeat tray projects, whether you are building gifts, shop inventory, or one-off custom pieces.

What kind of wood should I use for a valet tray?

Dimensional hardwood is a natural fit for tray projects because it gives you a stable, attractive blank to work from. You can also glue up cutting board strips or accent strips if you want to create a multi-species tray with more colour and contrast.

What finish should I use on the finished tray?

If the project may be used for food contact, choose a food-safe option like Walrus Oil Cutting Board Oil. For decorative trays, desk organizers, and non-food-contact projects, Grand Finishing Hardwax Oil is a great option.

Is this a good template for products I want to sell?

Yes. Valet trays, catch-all trays, and desk organizers are practical, giftable woodworking projects. The reusable template helps keep the layout consistent if you want to make multiples.

The Jumbo 9 Pocket Valet Tray Template is a practical way to turn hardwood blanks into clean, organized tray projects. Pair it with the proper router bits, template tape, quality dimensional wood, and the right finish to create a polished piece that works well for gifts, home use, craft shows, or small-batch woodworking products.
