How to apply Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C

Oil Plus 2C is a single-coat hardwax oil — one thin, well-wiped application colours and protects the wood. The whole job is about putting on a little and taking off the excess.

  1. Sand & clean. Sand to a final grit of about 150–180, then vacuum and remove all dust so you reach raw wood.
  2. Mix 3 : 1. Combine 3 parts Part A (oil) with 1 part Part B (accelerator). Only mix what you can use in 4–6 hours — after that the mix starts to cure in the cup.
  3. Spread thin. Work a small amount into the wood with a white pad or cloth, in zones of roughly 50–100 ft² so nothing dries ahead of you.
  4. Wipe off the excess. Let it react a few minutes, then remove all surplus oil with a white pad and clean shop towels within about 15 minutes per zone. The surface should feel dry, not slick.
  5. Cure. With Part B, handle gently after ~24 hours and allow ~5 days for full cure.

Using Precolor Easy first

Precolor Easy is an optional water-based pre-treatment for colour and contrast effects. On its own it does not protect the wood — it must be followed by Oil Plus 2C. Apply it, let it dry about 12 hours, break the raised grain and vacuum, then apply the oil with a white pad.

How much Oil Plus 2C will I actually use?

Rubio lists coverage as 300–500 ft² per litre. Where you land depends on the species, how fine you sanded, and whether the grain was water-popped — denser woods like maple sit near the top, open-grain and porous woods near the bottom. This tool positions your estimate inside that range by species and adds your buffer. For anything critical, make a sample first.

Can I use Oil Plus 2C on a cutting board?

Rubio does not recommend Oil Plus 2C for boards or butcher blocks used for cutting — a knife cuts deeper than the oil bonds. It's ideal for tabletops, furniture, cabinetry and floors.

Is it really only one coat?

Yes — Oil Plus 2C is a true monocoat. No topcoat is needed or recommended. The skill is in wiping off every bit of excess, not in adding more.
